KINDLE FIRE

Kindle Fires have 2 options for checking out ebooks. One is to do the entire process from the browser on the Fire. The other option is to install the OverDrive Media Console App from the Fire's App store.

Both are easy, however the biggest difference is that the App allows you to listen to MP3 audiobooks. The traditional "Web" checkout does not allow audiobooks.

Basics:

There are 2 options for the Fire. The App take a little longer to set up but also allows you to listen to audiobooks as well as read eBooks. If you'd like to just do eBooks, then please use the 2nd option For Web Checkout further down on this page.

For OverDrive App...

The app can be obtained by clicking "App" at the top of your Kindle Fire screen, then "Store" in the upper right. Search for Overdrive Media Console, choose, and install the free app.

After installing, launch the app and it should ask you to create an Adobe ID to register the device. This is both easy and free to do. The site will look like the picture below. There's a check box (pointed out by the red arrow below) asking if you'd like to 'Stay informed via email about Adobe products...'. Most people will want to un-check this and thus not receive additional e-mail. Hit create and the same e-mail and password you used on the site will be entered into the OverDrive App to register.

With this App, you'll be able to read and listen to both EPUB ebooks and MP3 audiobooks. The app does not support Kindle format eBooks.

After installing the app and registering it with an Adobe ID, familiarize yourself with some of the options at the top right. One should be to Get Books. Tap that, and then Add a Library. Find your library, which will then lead you to the North Country Library System as an option to add. Continue to the Emedia Website (basically it will look the same as accessing from a computer).

SIGN IN with your library card and PIN number (the PIN is usually the last 4 digits of your phone number). The Sign In is located in the upper right hand corner of the site. Once you're signed in, browse for an EPUB eBook or MP3 audiobook that you'd like. Tap the cover of your selection to find out more information. Once you've found something you'd like, tap Borrow, like in the picture below.

After tapping Borrow, you will then select the format you'd like. Because you have the App, choose the EPUB format or MP3 if it's an audiobook.

After selecting the format you want, tap Confirm and Download. The App will start downloading your selection. Take note that Audiobooks will take a LONG time to download and you'll want to make sure you're not using any sort of data plan to download it; only a Wi-Fi connection. Once downloaded you'll be able to enjoy your titles from the home screen of the App. The books will not show up on the home screen of the Fire using this method.

For Regular "Web" checkout (no additional software)...

Kindle Fires may do the entire process from the Web Browser on the Fire.

To check out a Kindle eBook, start at our Emedia Website in the Fire's browser. SIGN IN with your library card and PIN number (the PIN is usually the last 4 digits of your phone number). The Sign In is located in the upper right hand corner of the site. Once you're signed in, browse for an eBook that you'd like. Tap the cover of the eBook to find out more information. Once you've found something you'd like, tap Borrow, like in the picture below.

After tapping Borrow, you will then select the format you'd like. Obviously, you'll want the Kindle Book format.

Tap Confirm and Download, as indicated in the picture below.

You are then directed to your Amazon account on a different webpage. On the right is a GET LIBRARY BOOK button; if you're logged into Amazon already, choose the correct Kindle to send the eBook to from the white drop down menu below that button. Obviously, you will want to make sure the Kindle Fire you are using to do this is the option.

The Kindle eBook will show up on the homescreen of the Fire, just as your other eBooks do.

If you're trying to download "USB Only" ebooks as seen below, follow the regular process to Amazon, but hit Download at the end of the process, and then open the Kindle Fire's Downloads (found in the Web browser's settings) and open the downloaded file. This will place the downloaded ebook on the home page of the Fire and you will NOT need a USB cable or a computer to do this process. It only pertains to users with the traditional "black and white" Kindles.

Required Software:

Optional (see above). If you want to do audiobooks, please see the instructions above to install the App. If you'd like to do just Kindle ebooks, the Web check out instructions will work fine.
